Had some time to think today, do you guys think that replacing a heater core is something that should be done if you have the chance?
A seriously dumb question, but since my engine will be coming out and my coolant drained, it gives me an opportunity (or later when I take my dash apart). A replacement is 26$ on rock auto.

In the bird?
Depends.
Yes if you want heat and a defroster, no if you want to smooth the firewall and delete the system. On a summer only car I’d delete it just to avoid hose drape in the engine bay.

I need a functioning defroster for inspection so I am going to keep the heater. It works fine but given its age (and lack of perceived maintenance) I worry.

For $26 I would definitely do it. If not just for peace of mind. How hard is it to replace with the engine in the bay?

Depends on how easy it is to get to. They’re usually a bitch.

It’s sandwiched behind the dash so it would probably be easier to re drain the coolant when I have the dash apart than to do it right away.

In a 2nd gen DO IT NOW then. No question.
